Fall enrollment at Michigan's 15 public universities dropped 5,223 students, or 2%, to a total of 254,107 this fall, the lowest in at least a decade, per preliminary data from the Michigan Association of State Universities. Only three institutions avoided declines: the University of Michigan, University of Michigan-Flint and Wayne State University. Michigan State University recorded the largest absolute loss at nearly 900 students, while Lake Superior State University saw the steepest percentage drop of 14.4%. The decline reverses modest gains made since 2022 and comes amid a projected long-term drop in the state's high school graduates.
